St. John’s Evangelical Latvian Lutheran Church is seeking a Treasurer

The position of Church Treasurer is open.

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Church of Toronto is a congregation of 500 members located in midtown Toronto that has been the cornerstone of the Greater Toronto area Latvian community for 75 years.  We are seeking an experienced and passionate volunteer Church Treasurer to join our church community. The Treasurer has an important role in the financial well-being of the church and is responsible for accurate record keeping and the reporting of all financial transactions for the Church.

The position is expected to require an average commitment of two days per week with additional hours for month and year end financial reporting, particularly during December, January, and February. The position is flexible for a mix of Church and remote work.

The Church Treasurer reports to the Board and works with the Church Administrator and Bookkeeper as well as and outside professionals such as accountants or auditors as needed.

The role includes financial record keeping, budgeting and financial planning, financial reporting, cash management, contribution tracking, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, tax laws, and accounting standards, and financial analysis to assess the church’s financial health.

The Treasurer should have the following qualifications:

  • A solid understanding of financial management principles, accounting practices, and bookkeeping procedures. Previous work in a non-profit organization is an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with appropriate accounting software or systems,
  • Ability to work independently,
  • Strong verbal, written and organizational skills,
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information in an easily understood fashion,
  • A high level of integrity, confidentiality, and trustworthiness in managing church funds,
  • Ability to communicate in Latvian would be an asset.
