Our condolences on the passing of Laas Leivat, the Honorary Consul General of Estonia in Canada

The Latvian National Federation in Canada expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Laas Leivat, the Honorary General Consul of the Republic of Estonia, a true Estonian patriot and cherished friend of the Baltic peoples.

With great energy, dedication and inspired by his passionate love for Estonian culture, Laas dedicated his entire life to the freedom of the Estonian people. Indeed, his tireless advocacy of freedom for the Baltic States was felt in Ottawa and capitols throughout the western world. His efforts bore the fruits of independence for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and helped pave the way for Canada to become the first G7 nation to recognize the renewed independence of the three Baltic states in late August 1991.

Laas Leivat’s leadership in the Estonian-Canadian community is an enduring example for all people who cherish freedom, democracy and their cultural heritage.

The Latvian National Federation in Canada expresses its sincerest condolences to Mrs Ellen Leivat, to her family and to the Estonian-Canadian community.

May his memory be a blessing to future generations who value justice, freedom and their cultural heritage.
