Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) Statement on President Trump’s “peace” proposal

The American press have in recent days published what is rumoured to be US President Trump’s “peace” proposal for ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Trump Administration officials stated that should the two sides reject the US proposal, the US is ready to “walk away” from the “peace process.” (The peace process being non-existent in any event).

The outline of the Trump “proposal”  rewards Russia’s genocidal aggression and punishes Ukrainian resistance by demanding that Ukraine accept Russian control over occupied Crimea and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. Trump’s proposal is not one of peace – it is a proposal for occupation, penury, death and continued Russian aggression.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rightly stated that, “This violates our Constitution. This is our territory, the territory of the people of Ukraine.”

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, affirmed that the EU will never recognize Crimea as Russian. “Crimea is Ukraine,” Kallas stated.

Obviously, Ukraine cannot and will not abandon millions of its citizens to the cruelty and subjugation of Russian occupation. Nor can or will Ukraine abandon the rightful and just claim of the Indigenous Crimean Tatar People to their homeland.

Just as obviously, the Trump administration is preparing to blame Ukraine for the failure of its “peace process,” even though it is Russia that invaded Ukraine, it is Russia that is murdering Ukrainian citizens, it is Russia that is abducting Ukrainian children and it is Russia who could end the war today.

Despite the fact that Ukraine has agreed to an unconditional ceasefire, which Russia rejects, the Trump administration has, in its three months in office, pursued only one policy consistently –rewarding and appeasing Russia, and punishing and pressuring Ukraine.

Therefore:

  1. Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union must prepare for the end of US military assistance to Ukraine and the possible end of US intelligence sharing.
  2. Canada, the UK and the EU can and must replace the military aid the US provides Ukraine. The EU’s GDP is $20 trillion; the UK’s is $3.3 trillion; Canada’s is $2 trillion. Together, that is $25 trillion. Russia’s GDP is $2 trillion.
  3. The Russian military is not invincible and can be defeated.  What is needed is the political will to do so.

It is the sincere hope of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress that Canada, the UK and the EU act decisively, for Ukraine’s sake and for our own.
