Latvian school teachers in Canada share their experiences

This year’s first Canadian Latvian Teachers’ Meeting took place on November 2. The meeting was attended by teachers and principals from the Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton Latvian schools.
After a brief introduction by Agra Asmus-Vāgnere, LNAK Education Section lead, a lively hour of introductions and discussions followed.
Ilze Maksiņa talked about the Latvian Language Agency’s teacher training courses in Latvia, which she has attended for the fifth time, bringing home a lot of thoughts, suggestions and tasks for our schools far away.
As always, the use, specificity, development and change of the Latvian language are at the forefront. There was also discussion of the American Latvian Association’s education seminar.
Thanks to the LVA agency, three Latvian teachers from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa made the long journey to Seattle to share their experiences with their colleagues from the USA. This was an opportunity to share experiences, information and knowledge that will be passed on to each school.

In her talk, Diāna Briede touched upon the emotional side of language skills, as well as the learning materials available on the Education section of the ALAS website, in “Sietiņš” and in her co-created LNAK language learning project.
Pauls Legzdiņš talked about the Latvian highschoo’s distance learning programme.
The next meeting will take place on November 30.
