Thanks to the Latvian Society Integration Foundation’s <\/span><\/span>(SIF) <\/span><\/span><\/span>financial<\/span><\/span>support<\/span><\/span>this year, the Latvian National Federation in Canada (LNAK) has continued to develop and update its website <\/span><\/span>www.lnak.net<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>We invite you to take part in the project and to follow along!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

On the home page<\/a> you can find the most recent news from LNAK and other Canadian Latvian organizations. There are announcements about LNAK activities and new projects, information about funding available to organizations, news from the World Federation of Free Latvians (PBLA) <\/span>, news from organizations, and links to basic information about LNAK. There are links to the <\/span>video gallery<\/a>, photo gallery<\/a>, Sparkles<\/a> and Sparkles<\/a> (more on that later), SAN (Public Relations Portfolio) Manager J\u0101nis Liel\u0101mers’ Week in Review<\/a>, and the onlain calendar<\/a>. In addition to local events, the calendar also includes online events such as <\/span>Spotlight Latvia’s online business seminars and the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ informative online seminars.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We would like to emphasize that every Canadian Latvian organization is welcome <\/span>to add information, articles, and photo galleries about their organization<\/span>. You can do this by clicking on the “Organisations” <\/a>link at<\/span> the bottom of theweb page<\/span>. More than <\/span>30 organizations<\/span> have contributed<\/span> to the content so far.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Letts Jump into Latvian<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

2024. Last year, the Letts Jump into Latvian resource section<\/a> was created under the leadership of Aija Mazs\u012ble, with Mirdza Avens as technical<\/span> assistant<\/span>. The resources are used regularly and it is interesting to see which pages get the most hits. As much as they say<\/span> that “Tika tika grammatika, maziem b\u0113rniem nepatika” (“Who likes grammar? Not little kids!”), apparently that is not the case for adults anymore <\/span>, because “<\/a>latvian-for-adults\/lietvardu-locisana-un-darbibas-vardu-konjugacija-2\/”<\/span> (verb conjugation and noun declension) is consistently one of the most popular pages. Also “Sparks for Adults”,<\/a> a <\/span>monthly calendar with language activities <\/span>and interesting<\/span><\/span> cultural <\/span><\/span>link<\/span>cultural links,<\/span><\/span> is very popular.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In January , there was a hybrid <\/span>Live\/Zoom event where Aija Mazs\u012ble showcased the resources that had been collected. This meeting brought together a good group of adults<\/span> who would like to learn or improve their Latvian. As a result, the project moved out of the virtual world and into the physical world, as participants expressed a desire to learn in person. Following their suggestion, two workshops were held in Sidrabene in the spring. Thanks to the organisers and all the enthusiastic<\/span> participants!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Also<\/span><\/span><\/span> on request, in September in-person Latvian language lessons began at the Canadian Latvian Centre in Toronto, under the guidance of Anda Libere. The classes takes place on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 13:00. If you are interested, please contact <\/span><\/span>jumpintolatvian@lnak.org<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span>. All levels are welcome. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Also, if you are interested in helping to teach Latvian, please write to us. Thanks to Leah Houston and Patricia Robertson who take care of the administration<\/span>, thanks to Anda, and <\/span>thanks to the Latvian Centre for the facilities. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We know that there are others who live in Hamilton or elsewhere in Canada who <\/span>cannot make it to the Centre on Saturday mornings and who also have a desire to learn. In the resources section you can find some suggestions for online tutors<\/a>, but we are also looking at how we can expand Letts Jump into Latvian to other cities<\/span> to better <\/span>support all learners.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Latvian for babies<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In addition, the <\/span><\/span>https:\/\/lnak.net\/latviesu-valoda-zidainiem-un-pirmsskolas-berniem\/<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span> resource sections for parents and grandparents<\/span><\/span>are<\/span><\/span><\/span> regularly updated with new resources<\/a> and<\/span><\/span>monthly<\/span><\/span><\/span>“Sparks”. This year the project is led by Laura<\/span><\/span>Smite<\/span><\/span>(Montreal). The most popular resources are songs, printed materials and the monthly “Dzirkstel\u012btes”. New for “Dzirkstel\u012bt\u0117s” is that from October Laura has redesigned the format to make the calendar easier to use on a mobile phone: <\/span><\/span>https:\/\/lnak.net\/oktobris-dzirkstelites\/<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Another new initiative <\/span>this year is a series of interviews<\/a> with Canadian Latvians about learning and maintaining the Latvian language in today’s families. Valdis Jevtejevs (Toronto), Baiba Bumbiere (Montreal), Gabriella Bumbiere (Montreal), Kaiva Sukse (Toronto) and Aija Pl\u016bme (North Bay) shared<\/span> their thoughts on why and how to maintain the Latvian language in their mostly bilingual or even trilingual families. Books and songs play an important role within the family, but outside the family Latvian school, the Friday evening Zoom highschool, and the T\u0113rvete children’s camp play a significant <\/span>role in preserving Latvian identity and promoting a sense of community. Many thanks to Laura Hoffman (Ottawa) who carefully prepared and conducted the interviews! All interviews can be found on the LNAK YouTube<\/span> channel @LNAK-LNFC<\/a>. They can be watched or listened to as podcasts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There is also still time to take part in the October Latvian language promotion competition<\/a>. The challenge this month is to share Latvian words or<\/span>phrasesused by your family on a daily basis. Various apt expressions have already been submitted – “What are you sitting like a manor that’s been sold”, “Eyes shut like a soup lid”, and “Clear as a Soviet morning”. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Business and professionals section<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do you want to know how to get in touch with a Latvian musical duo, jeweller, piano teacher, web developer or therapist? On the LNAK website you will find an online version of the former Latvian Credit Union Bank calendar<\/a>, where Latvian companies<\/span>and professionals can advertise their offers. Unlike the bank calendar, businesses do not have to pay for their advertisements. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If you own<\/span><\/span> company <\/span><\/span><\/span>or provide a service, please post your <\/a><\/span><\/span>free <\/span><\/span><\/span> ad. It can be in one or more languages. Currently Zane Ka\u0146eps <\/span><\/span>is<\/span><\/span><\/span>assisting with this initiative, helping to add information. Virtual Museum<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A large part of the SIF project<\/span><\/span><\/span> this year is to create a virtual <\/span><\/span>museum<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>reflecting Latvian Canadian society. Dace Veinberga, project manager of the Virtual Museum, is working hard with Beate Augustane to create five online galleries. <\/span><\/span><\/span>LNAK <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>invites you to help by sharing your archival materials! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Photos and documents can be uploaded on the website museum.lnak.net<\/a>.
